Caulfield Cup: I cast my fashion verdict

Finally the racing season is back putting forth a whole lot of champers, sunny days, makeup mishaps, reckless burning of hard earned cash and most importantly (to me anyway), fashions on the field.

This year’s Caulfield Cup didn’t disappoint, with many of Sydney’s fabulous social-scene party favourites showing off flirty dresses, larger than life hats and rocking seamless tans.

Here are my favourite looks of the day. Each lady I believe stuck to key fashion rules to make the hot list. What are the fashion rules you ask? Drum roll please:

1.       Do not over accessorise. I understand that the races are the perfect time to play up your lady-like charm, think gloves, lace and strings of pearls, but the fashion rule “always take off one accessory before you leave the house” still applies
2.       They wore colours that sat nicely against their complexion
3.       They worked one key feature in their makeup, to avoid looking overly-made-up for a day time event in the sun. Both a smoky eye and a red lip are not necessary for a race day soiree.
4.       They stuck to their own individual style. Those who often opt for more edgy androgynous look were still seen parading in ensembles that reflected this taste. This deserves fashion accolades, it’s not a an easy task finding race wear appropriate dresses, that always sing true to your normal everyday wardrobe taste.

So here are the ladies that gained my fashion tick of approval.

1. The lovely Lara Bingle. She really has been on a crazy emotional-roller-coaster of sorts, reflected best within the media, during the last few years. One thing that hasn’t taken a turn for the worse? Her sartorial style; Here we see Lara rocking her new streamlined bod in an all black, floor length ensemble. She cleverly also decided upon a large diamond encrusted ear cuff, as opposed to a fascinator. This also ranks high in the style stakes as she took a risk, and it really worked in her favor.

2. Jessica Gomes. Oh la la. One of my favourite Australian models kept to a monochromatic palette with a few splashes of gold, evident in her accessories. The peplum style of the dress creates the illusion of feminine curves, the pointed gold heels make her legs appear even longer than they already are, and her dainty lace fascinator in the shape of foxy ears ring true of her own personal style. Gomes – you look magnificent!

3. Samantha Harris stuck to more traditional race track attire. This was something I expected as she is aligned with David Jones after all?! This gorgeous shade of lemon yellow sits perfectly against her bronzed complexion, her hat of choice was cleverly paired with black spike detailed pumps and an easy-to-carry box clutch for those much needed race day essentials. I particularly like this look because it’s safe, but still has a few little details like the architectural cuts in the dress, and the spike caps on her heels. It shows off Harris' individual style, while gaining points by sticking to race day fashion rules.

Who won your vote on best dressed at this year’s Caulfield cup? And do you agree with my fashion verdict?

Lots of love and here’s to an amazing week to come!
